My first "real" day of school...
is over! I had a great time meeting all the kids in my advisory (my "core group" of students who will meet me in the morning every day all year). We played many "get to know you" games, and came up with Advisory Norms (or standards of behavior that we'll agree to follow while in class). We also made a cool interweaving web on one of the walls in the room with string and a map of the world. The kids had to pick a country or place they wanted to travel to, and then lead the string from that country to their name (written on a name tag next to the map), and thence to another kid's name who also wanted to visit that country, then on to the next country, etc. It ended up looking pretty cool.
Tomorrow is more of the same, then Thursday we have a "mock schedule" day where the kids will get to visit their academic classes. Finally, time for Science to shine! We'll mostly be going over Safety rules and Procedure (important for the lab, as there is much glassware, and things that will burn and will explode and that can hurt in a number of ways). I have yet:
To write a Safety Rules/Lab Equipment scavenger hunt.
Clean up the lab (there is stuff all over the place on the tables, not cool).
Print out my Safety Rubric (ie - how I know what "grade" to give kids for the unit on safety).
Dance Dance Dance.
Which one do you guess I will get done first?
If you guessed "spend more time on LJ" you are correct.
